What is included in an ATSI Health Assessment

This is a structured and thorough assessment that may include:

  • Medical history review and current health concerns

  • Blood pressure, weight, and cardiovascular risk assessment

  • Screening for diabetes, kidney disease, and cholesterol issues

  • Mental health and social wellbeing review

  • Lifestyle assessment including nutrition, exercise, and smoking

  • Immunisation status check

  • Preventive screening based on age and risk factors

The goal is not only to identify current conditions but also to reduce future health risks through early intervention.

Who should have an ATSI Health Assessment

You are eligible if you identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. These assessments can be done annually and are recommended at all life stages.

They are particularly important if you:

  • Have risk factors for chronic disease

  • Have existing conditions such as diabetes or heart disease

  • Have not had a recent comprehensive health check

  • Want to take a proactive approach to your health

Regular assessments allow your GP to track changes over time and respond early.

What your GP is assessing clinically

Your GP will take a comprehensive and structured approach, including:

  • Identifying early signs of chronic disease

  • Assessing cardiovascular and metabolic risk

  • Screening for complications of existing conditions

  • Evaluating mental health and psychosocial factors

  • Identifying gaps in preventive care (e.g. screening or immunisations)

This allows for a proactive, preventive approach rather than reactive care.

How this assessment supports ongoing care

Following your ATSI Health Assessment, your GP may:

  • Develop a GP Care Plan for ongoing management

  • Arrange referrals to allied health services

  • Organise further investigations if required

  • Update vaccinations and preventive screening

  • Schedule regular follow-up

This ensures continuity of care and a coordinated approach to your health.

When to see a GP

You should consider booking an ATSI Health Assessment if you:

  • Have not had one in the past 12 months

  • Have ongoing health concerns or chronic conditions

  • Want a structured review of your overall health

  • Are due for preventive screening or immunisations

Even if you feel well, regular assessment is key to early detection and prevention.

What happens next

After your assessment:

  • You will receive a summary of findings and recommendations

  • A management plan may be created if needed

  • Follow-up appointments will be arranged

  • Your care will be reviewed regularly over time

Your GP will continue to coordinate your care and adjust your plan as your needs change.

Related GP services you may benefit from

  • General health assessments

  • Chronic disease management plans

  • Heart health checks

  • Preventive screening

  • Mental health care plans
